The Company’s annual thanksgiving service was held in the Church of St Botolph-Without-Bishopsgate on Wednesday 9th October.
If you have been before you will know the Service starts with the ringing of the Church bells and a procession comprising the Master & Wardens and Clerk of the Coopers’ Company along with The Master Grocer and Clergy. The Service is traditional with fabulous singing by The Coopers’ and Coborn School Choir which was commented on by members of the public who also joined the occasion this year.
The service was led by The Rector and Coopers’ Honorary Chaplain The Revd David Armstrong with The Rt Revd Dr Joanne Grenfell, Bishop of Stepney as Preacher.
The Clerk read Henry Cloker’s Will which, if you have heard it, is something of a tongue twister in its style and therefore presents a challenge to read.
After the Service, guests enjoyed a seated, hot buffet supper with a lovely selection of food and wine in the Church Hall provided by Alfresco Feasts.
The Master welcomed guests with a short speech and went on to present the newest and youngest members of the Company with their membership certificates and a tie.
The category of Student Membership was introduced in 2023 and presented to the Captains and Deputy Captains from Coopers’ Company and Coborn School. The School Captains played their part in the Service welcoming the congregation, taking the collection and with two singing in the choir.
The Master Grocer was then presented with the required 40 shillings (£2) which he kindly puts in the Poor Box. He gave a short speech and thanked the Coopers for their hospitality.
